The Kerala government is set to launch an extensive anti-drug campaign in April, a move announced on Monday as part of its strategy to curb the escalating narcotics issue in the state. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said this initiative will unify ongoing campaigns, bringing together multiple government departments, institutions, and community groups in a cohesive battle against substance abuse.
During a high-profile meeting at the Legislative Assembly, Vijayan highlighted the urgent need to escalate efforts to address drug-related challenges in Kerala. As part of the preparatory phase, a significant meeting on March 30 will convene experts and influential community representatives to devise a thorough action plan for the campaign.
Vijayan has directed a host of measures, including early education on drug awareness and promoting sports among children. Enhanced enforcement by police and excise departments, closing drug-selling shops, and strengthening checks at transport hubs are among the steps. State agencies, in an intensified anti-narcotics drive, reported thousands of arrests in the past month alone.
