Nine-year-old Afrin, who has faced mobility challenges since birth due to a rare bowleg deformity, celebrated her first independent steps following an intricate surgery at a private healthcare facility.
Afrin's condition, neurofibromatosis type 2 with congenital pseudoarthrosis of the tibia, persisted despite previous surgeries. The medical team led by Vikram Khanna employed advanced techniques to rectify the non-union of her bones, a complex issue exacerbated by poor bone quality and high refracture risk.
The innovative surgery involved removing abnormal tissue and employing the Titanium Elastic Nailing System, enhanced by an Ilizarov external fixator, to ensure proper bone healing and alignment. Afrin's family, overjoyed by her progress, hopes she will pursue a career in medicine to help others.
