The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is on heightened alert as it monitors respiratory and influenza cases in India, following reports of a Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China, according to official statements on Friday.
An NCDC senior official emphasized the importance of continuous monitoring, ensuring that the situation is kept under control. Dr. Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services, compared HMPV to common respiratory viruses, noting that it mainly affects young children and the elderly with flu-like symptoms.
Despite the international news on HMPV, analysis of India's respiratory data shows no significant increase, indicating strong preparedness, especially during winter outbreaks. Dr. Goel urges the public to follow basic respiratory etiquette and use standard cold medications to curb the spread of infections.
