In a significant development amidst ongoing hostilities, Ukraine and Russia have once again exchanged prisoners, bringing profound relief to families on both sides. The exchange, which took place in Belarus, saw more than 300 detainees, including 189 Ukrainians, return home.
Television images shared the poignant reunions as soldiers, wrapped in their national flags, embraced weeping family members long separated by captivity. Many of the Ukrainian returnees, including soldiers from the Azovstal mill siege, shared personal stories of hardship and change while held in Russian custody.
The United Arab Emirates played a facilitating role in this humanitarian act, marking the 59th exchange since the conflict escalated in 2022. The swap raises the total number of Ukrainians returned to nearly 4,000, highlighting ongoing diplomatic efforts during this protracted war.
