The Ahmedabad police have registered three FIRs after two beneficiaries of the PMJAY scheme died following allegedly botched angioplasty procedures at a local hospital. The cardiologist, Dr. Prashant Vazirani, responsible for the operations at Khyati Multispeciality Hospital, has been taken into custody, according to authorities.
The Vastrapur police commenced investigations on Wednesday night, leading to the arrest of Vazirani on Thursday morning. Families of the victims and the Chief District Medical Officer lodged complaints, prompting a crackdown on hospital officials, including its CEO and chairman, for charges of culpable homicide and conspiracy.
The accused allegedly exploited the government health scheme for financial gain, performing unnecessary surgeries and neglecting crucial post-operative care, resulting in the tragic deaths. The Gujarat government has vowed legal rigor against the hospital's management, spotlighting glaring ethical and procedural violations within the health sector.
