Perils of Pilgrimage: Chardham Yatra's Rising Health Risks
The Chardham pilgrimage in Uttarakhand has seen over 240 deaths this year, with health issues being the primary cause. High-altitude sickness, oxygen deficiency, and cardiac arrests are major contributors, particularly for those traveling by helicopter. Crowding and limited medical infrastructure exacerbate the health risks faced by pilgrims.

Over 240 pilgrims have died during the Chardham pilgrimage in Uttarakhand this year, primarily due to health-related issues. The pilgrimage, which involves visits to high-altitude Himalayan temples, is nearing its end as temples like Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri have already closed for winter.
Health officials report high-altitude sickness, oxygen deficiency, and cardiac arrest as leading causes of death. According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, 246 deaths have been recorded this year, compared to 242 last year. The fatalities are notably higher among pilgrims arriving by helicopter, who quickly encounter harsh weather conditions without time for acclimatization.
Six Sigma, a health services provider for pilgrims, emphasizes the need for acclimatization before exposure to high-altitude environments. Overcrowding, limited infrastructure, and inadequate medical facilities contribute to the rising number of health emergencies. Authorities are urged to improve medical availability, advise health checks, and control the number of visitors to manage the risks better.
