In a move highlighting the critical nature of healthcare delivery, a block medical officer (BMO) in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district was suspended on Sunday for gross dereliction of duty. Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Sharma enforced the suspension after an unannounced inspection of the Sub-Division Hospital in Darhal unearthed glaring absenteeism among the medical staff.
The inspection, aimed at assessing winter readiness, found the hospital severely understaffed with only one doctor and a technician present. This raises significant concerns about the healthcare services in the region as winter draws near. As a result, BMO Darhal is now attached to the office of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Rajouri, who will temporarily assume his responsibilities.
To investigate further, Additional District Development Commissioner Raj Kumar Thapa has been appointed as the inquiry officer. He is tasked with conducting a detailed inquiry into the matter within three days. The deputy commissioner reaffirmed the administration's dedication to ensuring uninterrupted, effective services during winter and underscored the potential for stern consequences for negligence.
