West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is poised to meet with junior doctors who have been protesting for nearly three weeks over the rape and murder of their colleague. The fast-unto-death strike has entered its 17th day, as calls for justice intensify.
Scheduled for 5 PM at the state secretariat Nabanna, the meeting occurs amidst growing pressure from the junior doctors, who have threatened a state-wide work cessation if their demands are not met. They have been fasting since October 5, alleging systemic healthcare issues in the state.
Banerjee has engaged with protest leaders, urging them to end their hunger strike by reassuring them of already addressing many demands and seeking a few more months to fulfill others. The protest was triggered by the discovery of the post-graduate trainee's body on August 9, sparking a nationwide outcry.
