In West Bengal, junior doctors continue their protest following the alleged rape and murder of a colleague at the state-run RG Kar hospital. The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has written to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, urging swift action to address the doctors' grievances.
FAIMA warned of a nationwide shutdown of medical services should any harm come to these medics, who have been on a hunger strike in Kolkata's Esplanade area. The association expressed concern over the deteriorating health of the protesting doctors.
Protesters are demanding the removal of health secretary NS Nigam, a centralized hospital referral system, better security, and increased police presence in hospitals. The protests, beginning after the events of August 9, ceased work for 42 days until September 21 when the state promised to address their demands.
