The Indian government has announced an extension of the free fortified rice distribution scheme until 2028, costing Rs 17,082 crore. The initiative seeks to address anaemia and micro-nutrient deficiency among the population.
The decision emerged from a Union Cabinet meeting, presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The extended scheme will run from July 2024 through December 2028 under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) and other welfare programs, according to a government spokesperson.
Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that the entire financial outlay would be funded by the central government, underscoring its commitment to improving public health through nutritional support.
