Government Extends Free Fortified Rice Distribution Until 2028

The government has decided to extend the distribution of free fortified rice until 2028, as part of the food law and welfare programs. The initiative has an allocated budget of Rs 17,082 crore, aimed at addressing anaemia and micro-nutrient deficiencies.
This decision was made during a Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Cabinet approved the continuation of free fortified rice supply under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) and other schemes from July 2024 to December 2028, as confirmed by the government.
Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the financial plan to supply this rice will be fully funded by the Centre, totaling Rs 17,082 crore.
