A mpox infection has been identified in Nakasongola jail, central Uganda, as confirmed by a prison spokesperson. The patient, a murder suspect, is in isolation, receiving necessary treatment. The outbreak, which began in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was declared a public health emergency by the World Health Organization in August.
Frank Baine, representing the Uganda Prison Service, remarked on the situation: 'Unfortunately, the prisoner couldn't be given bail due to the severity of his charges. We suspect he brought in the infection, but investigations are ongoing.'
According to the Daily Monitor, Uganda's mpox cases have risen to 41. Emmanuel Ainebyoona, from the Health Ministry, announced an update on the outbreak would be provided later on Tuesday.
