In a landmark decision, a British court sentenced a 47-year-old man to four and a half years in prison for plotting to commit female genital mutilation (FGM) against a young girl. Emad Kaky from Swansea was found guilty of conspiring to send the victim to Iraq for FGM and an arranged marriage.
This groundbreaking conviction marks the first time an individual has been charged with conspiracy to commit FGM and only the third overall conviction of FGM in England and Wales, as reported by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). The law, criminalizing FGM since 2003, aims to eliminate the practice, widely condemned for its severe health risks, including excessive bleeding and death.
Chief Crown Prosecutor Janine McKinney emphasized the legal system's dedication to prosecuting those involved in planning these crimes. Despite Kaky's planning, his scheme was foiled when a witness intervened, returning the girl to Britain and notifying authorities. Kaky's additional forced marriage charge further underscores his culpability. The prosecution provided compelling evidence of his intent, ultimately securing the notable conviction.
