Junior doctors at the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, confronted Congress' West Bengal unit chief Subhankar Sarkar and other party leaders with 'go back' slogans during a visit on Sunday. The doctors have been on strike, protesting the alleged assaults on medical staff following a patient's death.
Emphasizing the apolitical nature of their protest, the junior doctors demanded improved safety and security at their workplace. One protester addressed Sarkar, stating, 'This is a mass movement for better healthcare infrastructure. Please leave the place, we request you with folded hands.'
Sarkar, who described the protest as highlighting the 'collapse of security' for healthcare personnel, urged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to delegate the health department to someone else given her other responsibilities.
