Union Health Minister J P Nadda on Monday celebrated the progress of the National Medical Register (NMR), a comprehensive database of all MBBS doctors in India. The NMR, which was inaugurated on August 23 and has already received 20,000 applications, is uniquely linked to doctors' Aadhaar IDs to ensure authenticity.
Nadda commended the National Medical Commission (NMC) for adding 25,000 undergraduate and postgraduate seats in the last four years during the NMC's 4th anniversary. The NMC has also achieved its target of 1 lakh MBBS seats a year ahead of schedule and aims to add 75,000 more medical seats in the next five years.
The minister praised the NMC's use of new technological methods like AI-based college assessments and Aadhaar-enabled biometric attendance for faculty. He emphasized the importance of continuing these efforts to improve medical education quality. Nadda also highlighted the Family Adoption Programme, which aims to make MBBS students more humane and skillful clinicians.
