Health officials in Maharashtra's Latur district have initiated a probe after a man claimed that a piece of gauze was left inside his wife's abdomen during a C-section at a government hospital.

An official stated that appropriate action will be based on the probe's findings.

In his complaint, Habiba Wasim Jevale detailed how his wife underwent a C-section at the Ausa area hospital in April and was later discharged. She returned to the hospital after three weeks with stomach pain.

Jevale said she spent 20 days at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Latur. She endured abdominal discomfort for four months before a private hospital in Omarga discovered the gauze via a scan.

Jevale then lodged a complaint with Dr. Sunita Patil at Ausa Civil Hospital, demanding accountability. Patil reported the matter to senior officials, and a committee has been initiated. Notices have been issued to the doctor and nurse.

District Civil Surgeon Dr. Pradeep Dhele confirmed an inquiry committee has been formed, and all hospitals must submit relevant reports. Doctors' statements will also be scrutinized.
