Protesting junior doctors in West Bengal defied a Supreme Court order to return to work by 5 PM on Tuesday. The doctors stated their protest will continue until their demands, including justice for an RG Kar Hospital rape and murder victim, are fulfilled.
The doctors, on their 32nd day of protest, called for the removal of the Kolkata police commissioner and top state health officials. The state government extended an invitation for talks, but the doctors rejected it, terming the communication insulting and demeaning.
The protest, starting on August 9 after the discovery of the trainee's body, has severely affected healthcare services, leading to the death of 23 patients. The situation escalated with marches and sit-ins, and tensions heightened as some doctors faced disciplinary actions.
