Junior doctors in West Bengal have declared their intention to continue their 'cease work' protest, demanding justice for a colleague who was raped and murdered, despite the Supreme Court's directive to resume duties by 5 pm on Tuesday.
The aggrieved medics are calling for the resignation of the state's health secretary and director of health education (DHE). They have planned a rally to the Swasthya Bhavan, the health department's headquarters in Salt Lake, Tuesday noon.
The body of the postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered with injury marks in a seminar room at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, triggering national outrage. The doctors have been on 'cease work' for about a month.
The Supreme Court ordered them to resume duties, following the West Bengal government's assurance that no punitive action would be taken if the doctors returned to work.
