The Kerala government has initiated a significant step by setting up an advisory committee to streamline organ transplantation procedures within the state.

Health Minister Veena George announced on Sunday that this is the first-ever initiative of its kind in Kerala, backed by an official notification.

The panel will adhere to the guidelines of the Transplantation of Human Organs Act 1994, providing essential guidance and assistance to the relevant authorities. The aim is to ensure a more transparent organ donation process.

Chaired by the Health Secretary, with the Health Director as member-secretary, the panel comprises nine members, including medical and legal experts, social activists, and organ recipients. The committee will serve a term of two years.

The Director of Medical Education Department will continue to oversee licensing and regulation of transplant-performing hospitals, as well as investigate any violations.
