A recent study published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition demonstrates that low-carb diets can meet and sometimes surpass nutritional needs, dispelling doubts about their quality.

Often recommended for diabetic patients to manage blood sugar, low-carb diets limit high-carb foods. Despite proven health benefits, such as weight loss, skepticism surrounds their nutritional adequacy.

Researchers, including those from the University of Vermont, evaluated three low-carb meal plans. The results showed that all plans exceeded recommendations for essential vitamins and calcium for adults aged 31-70. However, some sub-groups, like younger women and older adults, might need additional nutrients.

They also found that two meal plans provided ample fibre for women aged 31-70, challenging the belief that low-carb diets lack fibre. High-fibre foods, including non-starchy vegetables, nuts, seeds, and certain whole grains, can be part of a low-carb diet.

Additionally, the meal plans provided sufficient protein without crossing unsafe levels.
