In an era of increasing safety concerns, Dr. M Srinivas, Director of AIIMS-Delhi, highlights the urgent need to balance stringent security measures with patient accessibility in hospitals. This discussion gains momentum in the wake of the horrific rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
Dr. Srinivas, who also serves on the National Task Force for healthcare safety, asserts that the demands for secure work environments are justified. 'We need to find a balance between making hospitals like a fortress and ensuring patients can easily access care,' he told PTI.
He further emphasized the necessity of improved infrastructure, balanced working hours, and better welfare measures to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for healthcare professionals. 'Doctors are not God. Complications will arise, but negligence must be avoided,' he added, cautioning against the risks of extended duty hours on quality care.
