Simon Rubick had lost almost everything due to decades of alcoholism and drug addiction.

In 2022, he found himself without a vehicle and a home, forcing his teenage children to live with friends. A drug-induced hospital stint made him realize his cocaine addiction was a death sentence. Living in Arvada, Colorado, Rubick knew he needed help but worried about his beloved German shepherd rescue, Tonks. Most rehab centers don't allow pets, and he thought he might have to give up Tonks.

Rubick, who is now sober for over two years and works as an addiction recovery coach, found salvation through PAWsitive Recovery, which fosters pets while their owners receive treatment. Serena Saunders, PAWsitive Recovery's founder with a history of addiction herself, has helped over 180 people and their pets since starting the group three years ago. After joining the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals International, the organization plans national expansion.
