The Supreme Court-appointed panel aimed at ensuring the safety and security of healthcare professionals held its inaugural meeting on Tuesday. The National Task Force (NTF) decided to extend consultations with stakeholders to prioritize issues and draft a comprehensive framework.

The 10-member NTF was established following the Supreme Court's suo motu response to the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, which led to nationwide protests. Discussions focused on improving the safety, security, and working conditions of healthcare workers.

Engagements with entities such as the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and resident doctors associations are planned to gather their viewpoints. The Union Health Ministry will also start a portal for stakeholders to submit their inputs. The task force aims to promptly develop effective recommendations addressing both 'Preventing violence against medical professionals and safe working conditions' and 'Prevention of sexual violence against medical professionals'.
