The Kerala Health Department has declared that the Nipah virus outbreak in Malappuram district is officially contained.

In a formal statement, department officials confirmed that all restrictions in the affected areas have been lifted following the end of a 42-day double incubation period.

Health Minister Veena George stated that out of the 472 individuals placed under observation, none tested positive for the virus and have thus been removed from the contact list.

A special control room, set up to monitor the outbreak, has now been disbanded.

Nipah virus was initially detected in bat samples in Pandikkad, Kerala, and caused the death of a 14-year-old boy on June 21.

Health experts credit the swift and robust measures taken by the Health Department for preventing the virus from spreading further.

Despite the containment, Minister George emphasized the need for continued vigilance.

She commended the health team for its effective and efficient response, while acknowledging the tragic loss suffered by the family of the deceased child.

Within hours of the outbreak, the department initiated containment measures, including the formation of 25 committees and the establishment of intensive care facilities in local medical colleges.

Targeted restrictions and special fever clinics helped control the spread, while volunteers ensured delivery of essential items to those under observation.
