Mizoram Health Minister Lalrinpuii on Wednesday announced an ambitious new healthcare initiative named the 'Universal Health Care System,' designed to cover the general population, including government employees and pensioners.

This scheme is set to roll out after the state signed a Rs 1,000 crore loan agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Lalrinpuii informed the state assembly that the Mizoram Health Care Scheme, implemented by the previous Mizo National Front (MNF) government, is functioning well, but over Rs 9.8 crore in medical bills for 2,921 beneficiaries remain unpaid.

Furthermore, Lalrinpuii highlighted that at least 243 villages in the state are without health centres or clinics. As of now, there are no plans to establish health centers in these underserved areas, he said.
