Approximately 20 individuals from Moundpur, Jenapur, and Karabalua villages in Odisha's Ganjam district became ill after allegedly consuming spurious liquor, according to local police on Tuesday.

The affected individuals, who reportedly consumed the liquor on Monday night, are being treated at various medical centers, including the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, where 14 people are hospitalized, and the community health center in Chikiti. Two of the patients are in the ICU.

Authorities have arrested six individuals, including Surendra Mallick, the alleged mastermind behind the illicit liquor operation. Excise Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan promised rigorous action against those involved in the illegal liquor business, as well as preventative measures in the new excise policy.
