Pakistan Strengthens Measures Against Mpox Outbreak
The Pakistan government announced a detailed policy to combat the mpox virus, reassuring the public of proper surveillance and screening at entry points. One confirmed case has been reported, and the government emphasizes daily monitoring, public awareness, and stringent quarantine measures to prevent the spread of the virus.
The Pakistan government has rolled out a comprehensive strategy against the mpox virus, urging citizens not to panic about its spread.
Prime Minister's Coordinator for Health, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, informed the media that there has been only one reported case in the country. Surveillance and screening are in place at all airports and points of entry.
He also mentioned that laboratories have been designated for diagnosis across all provinces and the federal capital. Ahmad stated that travelers from Africa, America, and Gulf countries would be monitored closely due to some cases being reported from Africa.
The Ministry of Health ensures continuous daily monitoring, while the government is closely observing the situation. Dr. Ahmad advised the public to isolate at home if anyone in their family exhibits mpox symptoms or has a travel history. He stressed the importance of consulting a doctor if symptoms appear, which may take 10 to 15 days.
In a related development, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a meeting focused on mpox, directing rigorous monitoring of the disease's spread. He emphasized effective screening measures at all ports of entry and instructed Border Health Services to maintain vigilance.
Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz inspected the screening procedures at Islamabad Airport, calling for expedited screening processes to identify potential mpox cases promptly.
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is spread through close contact. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the recent outbreak a public health emergency of international concern after identifying a new variant of the virus.
