A purported attempt to molest a woman house surgeon at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital incited a spontaneous protest by approximately 150 house surgeons engaged in the Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship at the institution. Authorities detained the suspect following intervention initiated by the hospital's management, according to a senior medical officer.

Surgeons convened in front of the Dean's office starting Thursday, advocating for better safety protocols for their female colleagues.

The confrontation occurred between the administrative block and the centenary building near her hostel, as the house surgeon approached the two-wheeler parking area to retrieve her scooter, police reported. The surgeon managed to fend off her attacker and escape the scene.

The case emerged shortly after a recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata's R G Kar Medical Hospital.

CMCH Dean, Dr. Nirmala, confirmed that an unknown assailant attempted to assault a female trainee around 9:30 pm on Wednesday. The incident was swiftly reported to the administration and the police, who promptly detained the suspect.

Subsequently, CMCH officials addressed issues of inadequate lighting on the premises with the Public Works Department. Measures are being taken to enhance campus safety for women, including the closure of the rear gate to deter trespassers, Dr. Nirmala stated.

Police disclosed that cases under Section 74 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act were filed against the alleged perpetrator.
