Sudan Refutes Famine Claims in North Darfur's Zamzam Camp
Sudan's Federal Humanitarian Aid Commission has denied reports of a famine in North Darfur's Zamzam camp, calling conditions there 'inaccurate.' However, a global food monitor recently confirmed the presence of famine and expects it to persist until at least October.
On Sunday, Sudan denied the existence of famine in North Darfur's Zamzam camp for internally displaced people. According to a statement by Sudan's Federal Humanitarian Aid Commission, reports of famine in the camp were deemed inaccurate and inconsistent with the criteria required to declare a famine.
Contradicting Sudan's official stance, a global food monitor on Thursday confirmed that conditions of acute malnutrition and high mortality, which define a famine, were present in the Zamzam camp. The monitor indicated that the famine is likely to persist there at least until October.
