The Union Health Ministry has unveiled its inaugural Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) aimed at ensuring the seamless transport of human organs via various modes of travel. This key initiative allows airlines to request priority take-off and landing for flights carrying organs, as well as front-row seating arrangements.

Meant to serve as a guiding document for organ transplant activities nationwide, the SOPs are crafted to optimize the use of valuable organs. Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra remarked that the streamlined process would offer hope to numerous patients awaiting life-saving transplants.

Additionally, the SOPs outline protocols for organ transport via air, road, metro, and ports. For instance, air transport allows priority reservation and late check-in for medical personnel, while specific corridors free from obstruction will be designated for organ movements. Coordination among various agencies will be crucial for achieving these aims, as emphasized by Dr. Anil Kumar, Director of the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO).
