Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Thursday reviewed the current status of suspected cases of viral encephalitis and Chandipura virus, discussing measures taken to control the diseases' spread.

Encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain, is a symptom of the Chandipura virus. Post-review, Patel announced a mega drive for vector control and disease containment across the state.

Currently, there are 33 suspected viral encephalitis cases, with 30 residents of Gujarat and three from outside, admitted in state hospitals. The state reported 16 deaths, and a four-year-old girl confirmed as the first Chandipura virus casualty in Gujarat, said Health Minister Rushikesh Patel.
