The U-WIN portal, modeled on the Covid-19 vaccine management system Co-WIN, is gearing up for a nationwide rollout by the end of August to create a comprehensive electronic registry for routine immunizations, according to official sources. Presently, U-WIN is undergoing pilot testing in all states and Union Territories, with the exception of West Bengal, which has yet to start data uploading under the program.
Targeting pregnant women and children under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP), the U-WIN platform records every vaccination event. Announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the interim Budget for 2024-2025, the initiative aims to enhance immunization management through coordinated efforts under Mission Indradhanush.
With the portal's launch, individuals can receive QR-based, digitally verifiable vaccination certificates and benefit from real-time session planning and status updates. The move seeks to address the challenges of manual record-keeping, lack of individual tracking, and the exclusion of immunizations given at private facilities. The U-WIN will notably provide a unified source of immunization data, benefitting some 2.9 crore pregnant women and 2.6 crore infants annually.
