Stranded Dreams: Bouhlal’s Struggle on Gran Canaria

Abdellatif Bouhlal arrived alone on Gran Canaria at just 15 after a dangerous sea journey from Morocco. His struggle continued as he spent three years in a reception center for minors. Upon turning 18, he was left to fend for himself amidst bureaucratic delays that prevented him from working legally in Spain.

He now lives in a tent on El Cabron beach, facing daily hardships, including sleeping rough and begging for essentials. Bouhlal's experience highlights the challenges faced by thousands of young migrants who embark on perilous journeys only to encounter integration issues in the host country. Government protection and aid for under-18 migrants cease once they become adults, leaving many like Bouhlal vulnerable.

The issue underscores the growing strain on Spanish authorities as the country saw a 167% increase in migrant arrivals to the Canary Islands in the first half of 2024. Internal disagreements over migration policies further complicate the situation, driving a wedge between political parties. Bouhlal, who hasn't seen his family in over three years, symbolizes the plight and resilience of countless young migrants.
