Union Health Minister JP Nadda officially launched a two-month STOP Diarrhoea campaign on Monday, aiming for zero deaths from childhood diarrhoea.

Previously, the strategy covered a two-week period involving Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS); the new plan includes extended efforts to distribute ORS and zinc to children under five.

'The STOP Diarrhoea campaign's goal is to achieve zero deaths from childhood diarrhoea,' stated Nadda, emphasizing a collaborative approach uniting Mission Indradhanush, rotavirus vaccine, and the STOP Diarrhoea initiative.

Nadda mentioned government actions that have reduced mortality due to diarrhoea, citing India's pioneering introduction of the rotavirus vaccine in 2014 and contributions from the National Jal Jeevan Mission, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, and Ayushman Arogya Mandir network.

He also stressed the importance of training health workers and pointed to past successes in vaccine delivery as a model for the campaign.

Health leaders, including Union Minister of State for Health Jadhav Prataprao and Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel, emphasized the campaign's importance and called for renewed efforts to prevent diarrhoea.

Health Secretary Apurva Chandra highlighted the campaign's expansion from a fortnightly to a more comprehensive two-month endeavor, rebranded from the Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight (IDCF) to STOP Diarrhoea, now featuring a focus on the Prevent, Protect, and Treat (PPT) strategy.

The campaign, featuring the 2024 slogan 'Diarrhoea ki roktham, Safai aur ORS se rakhen apna dhyaan', will run from June 14 to August 31, focusing on enhanced prevention and treatment measures.

Various activities planned include ORS-zinc corner establishments, advocacy boosters, health facilities maintenance, clean water access, and malnutrition tackling through improved nutrition and hygiene education in schools.
