The death toll in the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy rose to 47, with at least 30 people in critical condition, Tamil Nadu government officials confirmed on Friday. The bodies of 29 victims have been handed over to their families for final rites, according to Kallakurichi District Collector, Prasanth M S.
"A total of 165 people were admitted to various government hospitals after consuming spurious liquor. Among them, 47 have died. The condition of 30 out of the remaining 118 undergoing treatment is critical," stated the Collector.
"In a glimmer of hope, three affected individuals have recovered," he added. Addressing the media after visiting the patients, the Collector announced the formation of special teams to curb the sale of illicit arrack in the district through intensive operations.
He assured that there is an adequate supply of medicines for those affected and that efforts are ongoing to identify potentially impacted individuals through door-to-door enumeration in Karunapuram.
The public is being urged to undergo medical examinations if they have consumed illicit liquor to avoid further fatalities.
