Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar assumed the role of the 48th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff on Friday, marking a new chapter in his extensive naval career. In a tribute to martyred soldiers, Kochhar laid a floral wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, accompanied by the outgoing Vice Chief Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan.
A seasoned officer and National Defence Academy alumnus, Kochhar joined the Indian Navy in 1988. He specializes in Gunnery and Missile Systems, having commanded several ships like IN Ships Nashak, Vibhuti, and Kirpan. His leadership of INS Vikramaditya stands out, with the successful integration of its air wing during his tenure.
Kochhar's strategic acumen is highlighted by his roles at Naval Headquarters, including Director of Staff Requirements. After being promoted to Flag Rank in 2018, he managed key projects and commanded the Western Fleet. His leadership in the Western Naval Command during Operation Sindoor and his recent tenure as Commander-in-Chief, Andaman and Nicobar Command, underscore his commitment to enhancing functional integration across forces.
