Kumar Mangalam Birla Takes Helm as Vodafone Idea Faces Financial Crossroads
Kumar Mangalam Birla has been appointed as the new non-executive chairman of Vodafone Idea, replacing Ravinder Takkar. Despite government relief on adjusted gross revenue dues, Vodafone Idea continues to grapple with significant financial challenges, including spectrum dues and an extensive repayment plan over the coming years.
Kumar Mangalam Birla has been named as the new non-executive chairman of Vodafone Idea, assuming a leadership role amidst the company's daunting financial challenges. The announcement came on Tuesday, confirming Birla’s appointment effective May 5, 2026, while Ravinder Takkar, the outgoing chairman, will revert to a non-executive vice-chairman role.
Vodafone Idea is navigating a complex financial landscape, burdened with adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues despite government relief lowering obligations. The company's financial woes stem from past losses influenced by market disruptions such as Reliance Jio's competitive pricing.
Looking forward, Vodafone Idea faces a stringent repayment schedule totaling Rs 64,046 crore in AGR dues. Payments will be spread over the next 17 years, beginning in 2031, alongside current demands to address spectrum dues, mounting to Rs 49,000 crore over three years. As of December 2025, the company reports losses and a negative net worth.
