Milestone Achieved: NHPC's Fourth Unit Powers Up at Subansiri Lower Project
NHPC has commenced commercial electricity supply from the fourth unit of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, a landmark project on the border of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. With a total capacity of 2,000 MW, the project features eight units and represents India's largest hydroelectric venture.
NHPC, a state-owned enterprise, announced on Tuesday the commencement of commercial electricity supply from the fourth unit of its ambitious 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project.
The massive project, comprising eight units of 250 MW each, is being constructed at a cost of approximately Rs 27,000 crore near North Lakhimpur, straddling the border of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
In a public disclosure, NHPC revealed that the fourth unit began commercial operations at midnight on May 8, 2026. The project is notable for being the largest hydroelectric initiative in India, employing a run-of-river system with water storage on the Subansiri River.
