The government of Zimbabwe has announced to construct 500,000 housing units in a span of 10 years tuned with the Vision 2030. The overall project is expected to create thousands of jobs in the construction sector.
Zimbabwean government’s Vision 2030 is aimed to bring a radical alteration in the economy and turn it into an upper middle-income economy. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National, George Magosvongwe confirmed the reports and said that housing units aim at reducing the housing backlog that is currently at 1,25 million units.
George Magosvongwe opined that the construction will be accomplished under the National Command Housing Delivery Programme. It will reportedly refurbish old flats in Mbare (Harare) and Makokoba (Bulawayo), and provide capital to mothballed companies with potential for quick recovery.
The land has already been identified in provinces to kick-start the massive project. The Government is also emphasizing on densification, whereby stakeholders are encouraged to build vertically since land is a finite resource. The government of Zimbabwe said, by 2030, “there is no space for settlements like Mbare, Makokoba, McGregor, Sakubva, to mention but just a few.”
The ministry has thus partnered with local authorities in regenerating old and dilapidated houses or flats,” said Magosvongwe in a speech read on his behalf during a joint conference organized by the Procurement Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (PRAZ) and the Construction Industry Federation of Zimbabwe (CIFOZ).
