Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Saturday that the state will pursue capital punishment for a 65-year-old man accused of the sexual assault and murder of a minor girl in Pune. The Chief Minister emphasized that the matter will be expedited through a fast-track court.
Addressing the press in Mumbai, Fadnavis described the incident as both 'tragic' and 'highly condemnable.' He assured the public of swift legal action, stating the case has been enhanced for its severity. The victim, a young girl, was allegedly assaulted and killed, prompting widespread anger and protests from the community.
The accused was apprehended by local authorities after CCTV footage implicated him in the crime. Police reports suggest he enticed the child with food before assaulting and killing her. Troves of locals rallied, demanding strict measures against the perpetrator, while police officials promised an accelerated investigation.
