Moldova Lifts Energy Emergency After Russia-Ukraine Conflict Ripple

Moldova's parliament has ended the energy state of emergency initiated after Russian attacks on Ukrainian territory disrupted a major power line from Romania. The emergency action was deemed necessary to avert significant electricity grid pressures and potential fuel shortages, although opposition parties questioned its implementation.

Moldova's parliament has voted to lift the country's energy state of emergency set to be effective from Saturday. This decision comes after Russian assaults in Ukraine disrupted a crucial power line providing most of Moldova's electricity.

The outage of the Isaccea-Vulcanesti line, which routes power from Romania through Ukrainian land, had raised serious alarm, as it catered to 70% of Moldova's energy needs. The legislative body approved the annulment of the emergency measure with a significant majority of 69 out of 101 members voting in favor.

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu stated that the emergency declaration was a carefully calculated step to prevent a fuel crisis and stabilize the electricity grid. Despite opposition questioning, officials maintain the move was vital in steering Moldova through the energy challenge.
