Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni embarked on an unannounced diplomatic mission to Saudi Arabia on Friday, as confirmed by a government spokesperson. The two-day visit expands to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

The initiative aims to demonstrate allegiance with Gulf allies under the shadow of Iranian hostilities while securing Italy's energy interests. This visit marks the first by a European Union leader since the US and Israel launched a conflict in February, raising Rome's concerns over the stability of oil and gas deliveries.

Italy's energy strategy faces challenges as its Gulf supplier extended an LNG shipment pause due to Strait of Hormuz disruptions. Further Iranian attacks impacted Qatar's LNG exports, prompting Italy to source LNG from the U.S. Golden Pass facility, due in June.
