Coal India's Production Slump Raises Energy Security Concerns

Coal India Ltd reported a 1.7% drop in production for FY26, producing 768.1 million tonnes compared to 781.1 million tonnes in FY25. The company, key to India's power sector, also saw a 2.4% decline in coal offtake, raising concerns about energy security.

Coal India Ltd, the nation's largest coal producer, has reported a 1.7% decrease in production, totaling 768.1 million tonnes in the fiscal year 2026. This marks a decline from the 781.1 million tonnes produced the previous year.

According to provisional data released by the company, March output fell to 84.5 million tonnes from 85.8 million tonnes during the same period last year. In conjunction with the drop in production, Coal India's coal offtake saw a reduction of 2.4%, recording 744.8 million tonnes dispatched, down from 763 million tonnes.

As the primary fuel supplier for India's power sector, Coal India Ltd's output is pivotal for energy security in India, where coal remains essential for about 70% of power generation despite increased renewable energy efforts.
