Power Outage Revelations: CNMC Calls for Cross-Border Boosts
A CNMC report on the April blackout in Spain and Portugal suggests strengthening power links with France and harmonizing voltage regulations. The document emphasizes adapting technical and regulatory frameworks to handle renewable energy and operational complexities. Recommendations for affected sectors, including railways and telecommunications, were also included.
A recent report by Spain's energy watchdog, CNMC, examining the widespread blackout that left parts of Spain and Portugal without power for up to 10 hours last April highlights the need for preventative measures to avoid future occurrences.
The report suggests enhancing electricity connections with France, aligning Spanish and European voltage regulations, and increasing inspections of protective systems to bolster the resilience of the power grid. Although mechanisms existed during the blackout to manage the incident, the CNMC emphasized ongoing adaptation to changes in the energy landscape.
Acknowledging the transformation of the power system with renewable energy integration and greater operational demands, the report also recommends improvements for sectors impacted by the outage, such as railways, gas, fuel, and telecommunications.
