In a landmark initiative, the Punjab government, led by the Aam Aadmi Party, unveiled a financial assistance scheme aimed at empowering women across the state. Titled 'Mukh Mantri Mawan Dhian Satikar Yojana', the scheme pledges a monthly transfer of Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 to approximately 97% of adult women in Punjab.
Announced during the 2026-27 budget presentation by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, the scheme is touted as the world's first universal cash transfer plan specifically for women. Scheduled to commence registration on Baisakhi, April 13, this initiative reflects a major electoral promise fulfilled by the AAP government.
As part of a broader fiscal strategy, the budget also bolsters sectors such as education, health, and agriculture while maintaining fiscal discipline. The introduction of this scheme heralds not just a significant fiscal investment in women's empowerment but a monumental step towards gender-sensitive governance in Punjab.
