In a significant political standoff, former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat has openly criticized the Central government for its handling of the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024. While asserting the necessity for changes in the bill, Rawat stressed the importance of gaining the trust of those affected by its provisions.
The Congress leader accused the Union government of imposing the bill without adequately considering the opinions of opposition members in the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). According to Rawat, passing laws that could potentially disrupt the nation's harmony should not be done unilaterally.
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has called for a protest, urging Muslims to don black armbands during Alvida Juma prayers to express dissent. This protest has garnered notable participation across various cities, including Lucknow and Hyderabad, with AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi among key figures standing against the bill.
