In a significant operation, security forces have neutralized 16 Naxalites in an ongoing encounter in the Kerlapal area of Chhattisgarh's Sukma district, a top official reported. Bastar Inspector General of Police, Sundarraj P, confirmed the deaths, adding that two personnel sustained minor injuries during the operation.

The encounter was the result of a joint anti-Naxal initiative launched by the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) following specific intelligence inputs. The operation, which commenced on Friday, targeted the movement of Naxalites within the Kerlapal area under Sukma police jurisdiction.

As security forces continue an intensive search of the dense forest terrain, the state remains vigilant. Sukma is among the hardest-hit districts in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region, notorious for repeated Naxal violence. A recent IED blast injured a jawan in Narayanpur district, underscoring the persistent threat.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently addressed Parliament, affirming that Naxalism would be eradicated from India by 2026. He highlighted a 53% reduction in violent incidents over the past decade, crediting infrastructure development including roads and mobile connectivity for the progress made in Naxal-affected areas.
