Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the Lok Sabha on the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, emphasizing its significance for enhancing national security and economic growth. Following the discussion, the bill was passed, aiming to bolster India's global standing by 2047, said the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Shah remarked on the interconnected nature of immigration with national issues, stressing the need for comprehensive monitoring of foreign entries, aiming to both welcome lawful contributors and keep potential threats under surveillance. The policy reflects India's historic openness to migrants without requiring a separate refugee strategy.
Highlighting India's global diaspora spread across 146 countries, Shah asserted the bill's role in facilitating international academic and economic exchanges. He also noted the expansion of e-visa categories to simplify access for foreigners while ensuring strict enforcement against illegal entrants, citing recent upgrades in immigration system management and border security.
