In a significant push to empower India’s vibrant and rapidly growing visual effects (VFX) industry, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, in partnership with Aptech Limited and the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming & Comics (AVGC) association ABAI, has officially launched the WAFX Seminar Series. This national initiative is designed to nurture, mentor, and equip aspiring VFX professionals across the country, as part of the government’s larger Create in India Season 1 campaign.

The WAFX Seminar Series is a vital preparatory and inspirational platform leading up to the WAVES VFX Competition (WAFX) — a landmark event aimed at spotlighting India’s best emerging talent in VFX. The series will feature a lineup of esteemed VFX supervisors and professionals from leading studios who will share cutting-edge techniques, industry insights, and career development guidance.

Bringing the Best Minds in VFX to the Forefront

The inaugural seminar took place at Aptech’s Mumbai center, headlined by Jateen Thakkar, a celebrated VFX Supervisor renowned for his outstanding work on high-profile productions like Poacher, Leo, and Bhediya. Thakkar offered participants a deep dive into the practical and artistic aspects of visual storytelling and the evolving expectations of global studios.

Another highly anticipated session featured Jay Mehta, VFX Supervisor at Scanline VFX, hosted by MAAC (Maya Academy of Advanced Cinematics). Conducted as a nationwide webinar, Mehta’s session was streamed live across India, offering rare insights into the workings of world-class VFX pipelines and the level of finesse demanded in international post-production.

These seminars are more than just training sessions — they serve as catalysts for community-building and collaboration among aspiring VFX artists, educators, and studios, laying the foundation for a stronger VFX ecosystem in India.

WAFX Zonal Finals: Where the Action Builds Up

The excitement will intensify in mid-April 2025 with the WAFX Zonal Finals, a live competition across four key Indian cities — Chandigarh, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata. These events will bring together the top-performing participants from the All India Online VFX Contest, giving them the opportunity to showcase their talent in a high-stakes, studio-like environment.

Participants will present their creations live before a distinguished panel of jurors comprising senior industry experts and VFX leads from top Indian and global studios. The zonal winners will secure a spot at the prestigious WAVES 2025 Grand Finale, scheduled from May 1 to 4, 2025, at the iconic Jio World Centre in Mumbai.

Career-Making Opportunities and Industry Exposure

The WAFX competition is not just about winning awards — it’s about launching careers. Finalists and winners will gain national recognition, substantial prizes, and perhaps most importantly, studio internships with leading VFX firms. These real-world opportunities are poised to open doors for long-term professional success, making WAFX a unique talent pipeline for India’s creative and entertainment industries.

Join the Movement

The WAFX Seminar Series and competition are part of a broader national mission to place India on the global map as a hub for high-quality VFX production. With the government’s backing and industry participation, the initiative is expected to accelerate skill development, job creation, and innovation in the AVGC sector.
