In a decisive move, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) on Wednesday terminated the services of a contractual assistant professor following his arrest over an alleged sexual assault. The institution reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on violence against women, clarifying that JMI is not connected to the off-campus incident.
The accused, a 36-year-old faculty member from the Department of Political Science, was apprehended after reportedly assaulting a 31-year-old colleague under the guise of marriage. The university promptly cut ties upon learning of the arrest, underscoring that the faculty member's employment was strictly contractual and not permanent.
JMI condemned the assault in strong terms, emphasizing the need for justice and reiterating its adherence to the Sexual Harassment of Women (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act, 2013, through an active Internal Complaints Committee. The university stressed ongoing efforts for gender sensitization and its commitment to a safe academic atmosphere for all stakeholders.
